How many of these 8 iPhone pranks have you tried already?
If you’ve come to that stage where pranks are okay between you and your “target,” let’s talk. If not, look away, close this tab, and continue with your life. (Or read on, anyway; this is a blog, not the police.) But here’s a possible scenario:
Now, before anything else, let’s discuss the medium to use for these simple but FUN-damental pranks. Apple definitely took their time to engineer the best technology for their loyal consumers. Unfortunately, for future targets, we can utilize these features for gags and whatnot.
Disclaimer: Be quick and stealthy and choose your targets wisely. The author is not responsible for any damage to devices should they be thrown against the prankster or accidentally dropped due to frustration. That’s on your tab, pal. I wish you luck.
1. “Freeze” the Home Screen
This one’s easy – all you have to do is take a screenshot of the home screen by pressing both the Home button and the Power button at the same time. You then have to hold down the home button until the app icons start jiggling, and drag all of it towards another screen. Make sure you transfer all the icons. Hold down the Home button again to keep the changes. Now go to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness > Choose a Wallpaper and select the screenshot you took earlier. Now let the frustrated tapping begin.
This feature is genuinely useful for people who have optical difficulties, but most users don’t even know this is available in their phones. To successfully pull this off, follow this path: Settings > General > Accessibility then toggle on Invert Colors – this will change the display in a negative color rendering.
Now, pretend (note the emphasis) to drop the phone, then act surprised that the screen seems to be broken. Try to keep from laughing as your friend panics.
3. Contact Switch
This prank is simple to do but could result in endless possibilities. First you have to access your target’s contacts. Locate your name, and edit all details that might give you away like the name, email, picture or set ringtone. After that, you can literally just troll away until either you get found out or need to run from an angry individual. To get the best results, change the names of all the contacts listed.
4. The App Trap
Here’s the path you need to follow first: Settings > General > Accessibility. Toggle on Guided Access then open an app of your choice (the more annoying, the better). After that, press the Home button thrice and enter a passcode that’s easy to remember. Now watch your victim try to quit the app.
5. Endless typing reply
The iOS 7 Messaging app detects when the person you’re texting at the moment is typing and shows you an animated text balloon with three dots. Of course, there’s also the media-sending feature that allows you to reply with pictures and more importantly, GIFs. This is where the fun starts – before anything else, download this GIF. To use it conveniently, start by sending an intriguing question like “I’ve got some news” or “We need to talk”. Wait for the curious reply, and sending the GIF of those animated dots. Wait for impatient, violent reactions.
6. Text shortcuts of Evil
Personally, I don’t even find this feature convenient except for this prank and this prank alone. Okay, start by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Add New Shortcut. Now think of a word or a phrase, that you know your victim uses often or would most likely use in your conversation. Input that into the Phrase field and come up with the most ridiculous autocorrect for the Shortcut. For example:
7. Fake Calls
This time, you’ll be using an app as a resource. This app can be useful in many ways so you need to think your prank through.
Install this app on your friend’s phone and you can set up fake calls from within the Contacts and set up a caller picture, ringtone, the time you want the call to ring and even multiple calls after declining. Perfect if you want to scare them with an “unknown number” or if you want to get out from a really bad date – yeah, you can use this app for personal problems, too.
Okay, Drew ain’t using an iPhone, but you get the idea. Get this app at iTunes for $0.99.
8. Unlock for surprises
Like the Fake Call app, you will be using a third-party resource to pull this prank. iPhoneception is an online platform you could open through the iPhone’s Internet browser and lets you select from four options: Explosion, Gravity, Kittens, and Zombie. Add to Home Screen the option you choose, launch it, wait for it to load, and lock the screen. Be a little more cautious if you use the fourth Zombie option as your victim could drop the device from shock or pummel you from extreme annoyance. Here’s a screencap from the website:
An occasional pranking is definitely a building block of friendship – in fact, I can’t imagine a great friendship without it – but make sure you know your target well enough (and vice versa) before you prank him or her. Now, who says you can only play apps and text on an iPhone?
