Apple CarPlay coming soon to high-performance vehicles
Hot on the heels of Apple releasing news of CarPlay yesterday morning, various car marques have come forward with their own sneak peeks of Apple’s latest technology integrated into their vehicles. This week Apple announced Volvo, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz as first launch partners, and all three have already revealed how CarPlay will be implemented in their future vehicles.
Volvo’s promotional materials include a quick video, which shows how Apple’s CarPlay and built-in user interface are simultaneously displayed on the large touch screen on the Volvo XC90 SUV, slated to be released later this 2014. As of the XC90, a wired connection via a Lightning connector will be needed to activate AirPlay, although Volvo has also stated that WiFi connectivity for AirPlay will be available in the near future.
Wondering what CarPlay would look like in a Benz? The premier German automaker has released photos of what the CarPlay would look like on the dashboard of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class line, which has CarPlay displayed on a tablet-sized screen above the central panel. Like in the Volvo XC90, a wired connection via a Lightning connector is needed. Mercedes-Benz’s own ‘COMAND’ app will be integrated with CarPlay, too.
The first CarPlay-enabled Ferrari made its debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. On stage at the Motor Show yesterday, the updated Ferrari FF grand tourer was introduced by Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo and iOS marketing chief Greg Joswiak. Similar with Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari has included an ‘FF’ app for CarPlay’s homescreen on the marque’s newest coupe.
