Apple CarPlay: Enjoying iOS on your new car’s dashboard
Early this morning, Apple finally released news of its newest plans in mobile OS integration: Apple CarPlay. Previously named ‘iOS in the Car’, Apple CarPlay integrates iOS into your daily commute through a simplified interface on a touchscreen display on the dashboard.
According to Apple, CarPlay is designed for compatibility with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5. To ensure safety on the road, voice command is extensively used, so Siri will be at your beck and call for whatever you want to do. Once you plug your iPhone in, you can get turn-by-turn directions and traffic conditions and make and receive calls. Siri will also be there to help you handle incoming and outgoing text messages, so you can keep in touch without having to look at your iPhone. Listening to your favorite songs, podcasts, and playlists while driving shouldn’t be a problem either. You’ll just have to tell Siri what you want to listen to. You can also stream content from iTunes Radio, Beats Radio, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, and Spotify. Cars compatible with CarPlay will also have built-in controls to help you access your music and podcasts.
CarPlay-compatible vehicles will be equipped with additional controls to help you use CarPlay. Buttons for making calls and activating Siri will be within easy reach. Knobs and dials will also help you with volume control and navigating the CarPlay menu. According to Apple, in 2014, CarPlay will be available in vehicles from Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. Some of these vehicles will be on display at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Other popular car makes slated to manufacture CarPlay-compatible vehicles include Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Land Rover, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. Sounds pretty sweet, right?
