iTunes Radio on the iPod touch

Love listening to music but don’t want to fill your iOS device’s storage with multiple gigabytes’ worth of songs? iTunes Radio is the perfect service for you.

iTunes Radio, released along with iOS 7, is Apple’s free streaming radio service. The service allows you to create your own radio stations on your iOS device, whether you’re using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. iTunes Radio is also integrated into the native Music app, so you don’t have to download any additional software to use the service.

Creating a radio station

Creating a radio station on iTunes Radio takes less than five minutes. Just launch the Music app and tap the ‘Radio’ tab along the bottom of the screen. Tap the ‘New Station’ button and type in your favorite artists’ names or the titles of your favorite songs and build your station around the results that are displayed. After tapping the ‘New Station’ button, you can also opt to choose a station from the 200 available stations and customize that according to your preferences.

Customizing a radio station

Each iTunes Radio station you create will have an ‘Edit’ button so you can easily rename the station and add specific artists, songs, and genres. You’ll also be able to further customize your listening experience by building up your ‘Never Play’ section. Sharing your radio stations is convenient, too; you can use AirDrop, Mail, Messages, Twitter, and even FaceBook to tell your friends all about your new radio station.

Viewing listening history

For added convenience, iTunes Radio also keeps track of the songs and statons you’ve listened to recently. A ‘History’ button is in the top-left corner of the ‘Radio’ tab, and tapping the button displays all the tracks you recently streamed on iTunes Radio. From this interface, you’ll be able to purchase the tracks you want from the iTunes store.

Tweaking iTunes Radio settings

On the currently playing screen, you’ll see an ‘i’ icon at the top. Tapping on this icon will take you to a screen where you can further tweak your iTunes Radio experience. One useful feature is the ability to tune a station so that it plays more hits, streams a variety of songs, or gives you more new songs to listen to. This feature comes in handy when you want to discover new music. On this screen, you’ll also be able to change your preferences in terms of explicit content on iTunes Radio.

iTunes Radio is available on a wide variety of iOS devices, including the latest-generation iPod touch, iPad, iPad mini, and iPhone.
